Work from Home Online

While I was in St. Charles yesterday, I was chatting with one of the computer center staff members. Unlike before school starting this week, we were both a bit lonely standing there. No students arrived yesterday for my workshops, nor did any appear the day before. Nobody was in and out of the computer center at all, in deep contrast to recent days when youngins and teens were streaming in and out all day long. The computer center staff person and I were looking at the remaining August workshop schedule. One of the workshop titles caught his eye. It was "Work from Home Online." He looked at me and said, "Work from home online - Can you really DO that?" My first response was simple enough, "I do." Then I proceeded to tell him several related stories about how I had to drive to Duffield to get to broadband until I could get broadband to Rose Hill and my house. How I write grants for non-profits who are located far away at times, such as VCU in Richmond, and I work for them as a consultant using broadband. And I further explained that I'm from Abingdon, graduated high school in Pennsylvania, lived in Sweden, climbed pyramids in Mexico, laid in the sun on a Greek Island, watched the changing of the guard in London, but there's no place on Earth I'd rather be than Rose Hill, Virginia. I WANT to live here, and fiber-to-the-home lets me do that. I even relayed the story I've told many times over about how I told my Dad that with broadband available now... "Living in Lee County no longer requires a vow of poverty." Yes, I know you CAN work from home online, because I do it. I'm doing it right now as I write this blog entry! I know you don't have to be a grant writer to work from home online. The work from home online opportunities are probably even much broader than the sample opportunities I am aware of. I know it's hard to hire find a Lee County webdesigner, no certification required... Come to the workshop!!

Turn Your Still Photos into a Movie with Music
Tuesday, August 10, 2010 at 1:00PM – 2:00PM

FREE WORKSHOPS FOR BEGINNERS

Instructor Harold Jerrell explains, “Have you recently purchased a digital camera? Are you confused with all the camera settings and do you just place the camera in AUTO mode and take pictures? If you would like to become more creative and learn how to use the camera’s settings to make better photographs, then you are invited to participate in free photography workshops at the St. Charles Community Computer Center. Subjects to be discussed will include working your images in the computer, removing unwanted objects such as dust spots or electrical lines, enhancing colors, cropping, sending photographs through e-mail, and finally how to create a DVD slideshow with music that can be watched on TV.”

Harold Jerrell’s photographs have appeared in numerous publications, including Blue Ridge Country magazine and the cover of “Virginia Wildlife” magazine. His photographs are also used on several websites, including http://www.rosehillvirginia.org/ and the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park website. With the theme, “Enjoying Nature through the Eye of the Camera,” Jerrell’s photographs were exhibited at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center in Abingdon, Virginia. Recently retired, Jerrell served as the Lee County Agricultural Extension Agent for Virginia Cooperative Extension for many years. His photographs are primarily outdoor nature scenes.

A recent workshop participant explains, “Harold Jerrell's digital photography class was both helpful and wonderfully enjoyable. Through a series of workshops, the training builds up to making movies from quality still shots with sound and neat extras. There are stunningly beautiful photos of the great outdoors in his sample presentations. Harold Jerrell’s sample presentations include photos from the Lee County area, Smoky Mountains, and other national park scenery with flowers and wilderness landscapes, including a lot of Colorado in the Rockies with big ‘critters.’ I think learning to make these movies will be a lot more fun than just printing photos and putting them into a photo album that sits on the shelf. I highly recommend the class, even if you come just to watch the breathtakingly beautiful movies, while learning how they were made.”

The St. Charles Community Computer Center is located in a white house across the street from the health clinic. The workshops are free and open to the public. No registration is required. Seating is limited to 10 computer stations. The workshops have been designed to assist beginners with no or limited computer or Internet experience. The St. Charles Community Computer Center offers free access to high speed broadband Internet service in its 10-station computer center six days a week.
